Impuls Deutsch
Intercultural | Interdisciplinary | Interactive
Herzlich Willkommen! Welcome to Impuls Deutsch: Intercultural | Interdisciplinary | Interactive, an innovative textbook series for beginning and intermediate college German.
Impuls Deutsch is a modern and sophisticated textbook series that students will be eager to use and that teachers will find easy and enjoyable to implement in their classrooms. While the theories and methods that undergird these books are widely accepted and supported, Impuls Deutsch is unlike any other German textbook series on the market. Its main distinguishing features include:
Multiple Perspectives:
Impuls Deutsch offers engaging content from multiple disciplines, designed specifically to appeal to diverse student populations.
Inclusiveness:
Impuls Deutsch sees its students and instructors as belonging to the German-speaking community. In this view, its interaction with and depiction of people is purposely sensitive to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and dis/ability.
Structure:
Impuls Deustch fully incorporates the flipped classroom approach into the three principal student components: LERNEN, MACHEN, and ZEIGEN. The success of the class depends on students coming to class prepared to learn with their fellow learners.
Flexibility:
Vertiefungsstunden are special units that do not introduce new grammar. They can be left out to build flexibility into your syllabus, or they can be included to reinforce grammar while engaging with new material.
Attitude:
Learning German should be fun. Impuls Deutsch elevates its tone in line with the maturity level of college students and instructors. Students and the issues they face are taken very seriously, but, at the same time, our hope is that you will appreciate the elements of humor that have been built into Impuls Deutsch.

Impuls Deutsch 1
Exciting & innovative—Impuls Deutsch 1 takes beginning learners of German to novice-high proficiency in just two semesters. Consisting of eight thematic chapters and 102 daily lessons, Impuls engages students and instructors alike with sophisticated, yet accessible topics from the arts, humanities, and STEM fields.
Impuls Deutsch 2
Our premier intermediate text, Impuls Deutsch 2 builds upon the foundations of the beginning series and further expands students’ self-discovery and autonomy. Following the same eight-chapter structure as Impuls Deutsch 1, this second-year text continues to foster critical thinking, and builds intercultural competence and the ability to engage in German with important topics faced by both the USA and the D-A-CH-L countries. Students will develop their language proficiency through the intermediate level.
The Flipped Classroom & How It Works
A central goal of the Impuls Deutsch flipped classroom is to maximize the number of minutes that students spend on meaningful communication. Students prepare for class with the LERNEN Workbook. In class, they engage with their peers using the MACHEN Course Book. Next, they solidify and demonstrate what they accomplish each day with the ZEIGEN Workbook. Then, they start the process again with LERNEN in preparation for the next class period.
Your class time is precious. Impuls Deutsch enables you to make the most of it.
Intercultural
Impuls Deutsch embraces a pluralistic view of German-speaking society. By representing places and stories from German speakers of diverse origins, Impuls Deutsch makes a conscious effort to work towards a more socially just curriculum through the inclusion of historically marginalized groups, front-and-center in the curriculum.
Impuls Deutsch celebrates diversity, not only by showcasing a wide range of racial, ethnic and religious groups, but also the LGBTQ+ community, diverse gender identities, and people with dis/ability. This is not only an acknowledgement of the diversity within the German-speaking countries, but also an acknowledgement of our instructors and students around the world.
Interdisciplinary
Students will engage with fresh content from the arts, humanities, and STEM fields, while building transferrable, real-world skills. Students will maximize learning by coming to class motivated and equipped with prior knowledge. They will connect with topics concerning all people on an existential level.
Interactive
The philosophy of Communicative Language Teaching serves as the backbone to this series. Students are presented with multiple ways of putting what they have learned and practiced into action. Whether your class is online or face-to-face, every lesson in Impuls Deutsch stresses meaningful interaction, the foundation of language learning.
BlinkLearning is the Learning Management System (LMS) for all digital versions of Impuls Deutsch. The platform contains all homework assignments for the interactive Workbooks. In the Blended Bundle, students receive their Workbook product license inside the front cover of their MACHEN Course Book.

Learning with ACTFL Standards
Impuls Deutsch uses the 2017 NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do statements, which are based on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners. The sequencing of grammar, vocabulary, and cultural topics is designed according to ACTFL standards. Students are expected to achieve the following ACTFL proficiency levels at the end of each text:
Impuls Deutsch 1
Novice High/Intermediate Low
Impuls Deutsch 2
Intermediate Mid/High
At the beginning of every chapter, students are presented with learning goals. At the end of each chapter, learners assess their own progress by working through the Can-Do Statements. Instructors and students are encouraged to dedicate time to the Can-Do Statements, which are based on ACTFL best practices for benchmarking performance. Tangible self-improvement is integral to the holistic experience of learning German with Impuls Deutsch.
In a large German program at a public university in the US, students took the official ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPIc) after learning German with the Impuls Deutsch textbook series. 91% of the students were Intermediate speakers at the end of Impuls Deutsch 2, with the majority of having being assigned an Intermediate Mid rating on the OPIc. 20% of these students even reached the Intermediate High level on the OPIc, which according to ACTFL definition describes students who can handle tasks associated with the Advanced level, just not yet all of the time.
You can find detailed descriptions of these language levels on the official ACTFL website:

Added Value of Impuls Deutsch
The clear and consistent structure helps new instructors pick up Impuls Deutsch for the first time and prepare for class with ease. If you need extra flexibility in your syllabus, select lessons (Vertiefungsstunden) in each chapter may be skipped or substituted at no cost to your students’ grammar goals.
An online teacher's manual with solutions, helpful resources, and specific tips and daily guidance from the authors is also available.
