Herzlich Willkommen! Welcome to Impuls Deutsch: Intercultural | Interdisciplinary | Interactive, an innovative textbook series for beginning college German.

Impuls Deutsch is a modern, theoretically sophisticated textbook that students will be eager to use and that teachers will find easy and enjoyable to implement in their classrooms. While the theories and methods that undergird this book are widely accepted and supported, Impuls Deutsch is unlike any other German textbook on the market. Its main distinguishing features include:

Multiple Perspectives:

Impuls Deutsch offers engaging content from multiple disciplines, designed specifically to appeal to diverse student populations.

Inclusiveness:

Impuls Deutsch sees its students and instructors as belonging to the German-speaking community. In this view, its interaction with and depiction of people is purposely sensitive to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and dis/ability.

Structure:

Impuls Deustch fully incorporates the flipped classroom approach into the three principal student components: LERNEN, MACHEN, and ZEIGEN. The success of the class depends on students coming to class prepared to learn with their fellow learners.

Flexibility:

Vertiefungsstunden are special units that do not introduce new grammar. They can be left out to build flexibility into your syllabus, or they can be included to reinforce grammar while engaging with new material.

Attitude:

Learning German should be fun. Impuls Deutsch elevates its tone in line with the maturity level of college students and instructors. Students and the issues they face are taken very seriously, but, at the same time, our hope is that you will appreciate the elements of humor that have been built into Impuls Deutsch.

    Intercultural

Intercultural Competence is the ability to understand and communicate with member of diverse groups of people. Impuls Deutsch aims to not only help students practice and develop the foundations of intercultural competence with respect to the German-speaking world, but also to define and evaluate their own cultural identities in juxtaposition to others. Students reflect on these issues, deconstruct stereotypes in Kulturpunkten, compare their own perspectives to others, and challenge their own beliefs about other cultures. Impuls Deutsch embraces a pluralistic and diverse view of German-speaking countries: By representing German speakers of different origins and by including places and stories from different German-speaking countries, Impuls Deutsch acknowledges and attempts to reduce the exclusion of historically marginalized groups from the curriculum. The goal is to make all students feel included in today’s contemporary German-speaking community.

The cultural diversity portrayed in this book includes not only different ethnic and religious groups, but also the LGBTQ+ community, diverse gender identities, and people with dis/ability. Impuls Deutsch uses the gender star (without causing confusion for beginning language learners). It introduces non-traditional families, and avoids ableist language and content to the greatest extent possible. This is not only an acknowledgement of the diversity within the German-speaking countries, but also an appreciation for our students, all of whom now become part of the heterogeneous, vibrant community of German speakers.

    Interdisciplinary

In every chapter, we integrate multiple disciplinary perspectives. Students engage with relevant content from STEM, arts, and humanities, while building transferrable, real-world skills including collaboration, problem solving, time management, and global awareness. Every chapter leads to larger questions that have implications for all aspects of life. Starting with simple questions „Wer bin ich?” students will begin to think about their lives in a global, interconnected environment. We take the students seriously as the competent adult learners they are and let them engage with meaningful content that is interesting and worthy of more in-depth discussion, with the vocabulary and grammar that is available to them even at the beginning stages. The topic of each chapter leads to broader questions. Where does my food come from? How much living space do I need? How can I be more efficient in my daily life? How does my way of living compare to how people in other parts of the world live? What technologies are there to solve problems we encounter? In a more general sense, every chapter in this book links everyday life situations to questions about technology, the arts, and our role in this world.

    Interactive

Throughout Impuls Deutsch, students are presented with meaningful, contextualized tasks that provide students multiple ways of putting what they have learned and practiced into action.

Impuls Deutsch provides three interactive online tools to save instructors and students time in preparing and managing coursework. Both preparatory LERNEN and reinforcing ZEIGEN chapters are available with auto-graded activities in the BlinkLearning platform. Self-guided modules for vocabulary, content, and grammar have been specifically developed for Impuls Deutsch on Quizlet and Kahoot!, which may be used both for preparation and in-class use.

Impuls Deutsch and Learning with the ACTFL Standards

Impuls Deutsch uses the 2017 NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do statements, which are based on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners. The sequencing of grammar, vocabulary, and cultural topics was designed according to ACTFL standards, aiming for Novice High (productive) and Intermediate Low (receptive) levels on the ACTFL proficiency scale by the end of book 1.

At the beginning of every chapter in MACHEN, students are presented with learning goals that state what they will have accomplished by the end of the chapter. At the end of each chapter in ZEIGEN, learners assess their own progress by working through the Can-Do statements covering their language and intercultural proficiencies. We encourage instructors and students to dedicate time to these lists, as tangible self-improvement is absolutely integral to the holistic experience of learning German with Impuls Deutsch.

    Prepare to use Impuls Deutsch
Efficient instruction is facilitated through a clear and regimented structure; Impuls Deutsch 1 contains eight chapters and is suitable for use over the course of two college semesters of first year German. Chapters are broken down into sequential units, each designed to be covered in a 50-minute class period. New instructors will be able to pick up Impuls Deutsch for the first time and prepare for class with ease.

If you need extra flexibility in your syllabus, Impuls Deutsch 1 contains a number of units in each chapter that may be skipped or substituted at no detriment to the underlying grammatical progression of the series. A teacher's manual with special tips and guidance from the authors is available for purchase.

Klett gives you the ability to mix and match print and online components to best suit your program's needs. With the Blended Bundle, a single ISBN allows you to combine the MACHEN (print Course Book) and the LERNEN and ZEIGEN (online Workbook) components seamlessly into your curriculum. This bundle enables students to complete online homework and receive immediate feedback on the device of their choice, saving you time on grading!
