The first D-A-CH textbook that gives equal attention to the three German-speaking countries. Optimal covers topics of everyday life in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. The Swiss, Austrian, and German authors based this textbook series on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.

  • Optimal follows a functionally driven curriculum, making goals transparent for both the learner and teacher every step of the way. While it utilizes the students' world knowledge, it engages them in the process of discovering new linguistic patterns and structures. All components of the series take an integrated approach toward the acquisition of functional patterns and grammatical structures in conjunction with encouraging reflection about linguistic and cultural similarities and differences.

The textbook is divided into 12 chapters covering topics of everyday life in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. Each chapter is subdivided into integrated units of authentic cultural topics, vocabulary and expressions, grammar, pronunciation, and practice and review. Each page in the textbook is mirrored by a corresponding page in the workbook (with audio CD).

    Components recommended for the student:

    • Textbook
    • Workbook
    • Glossary

These items are also available for additional practice:
